I am a self admitted podcast fiend. These friendly voices have kept me company on walks, when I’m doing the dishes, and when I’m getting through the more mundane admin-y bits of being an artist / business owner.
I’ve learnt so much from this generous content, so I wanted to share my favourite listens with you in this short & sweet post. I’ve kept this list focused around creativity & artistic practice, but will definitely be sharing my outdoor & nature focused listens in the future!
I think Andy (illustrator) is a mind reader - every episode without fail teaches me or makes me think deeper about what and how I’m approaching my practice. It’s like having a friend or a tutor giving you all these insights to a professional practice, with lots of energy when you need a pick me up.
I’m sure you already know art juice, but just in case, this is a beautiful - mostly painting focused - podcast between two artists sharing moments on their practice. It’s filled with honest conversations that we all think and feel when on our solo mission of creating art, and has definitely helped to make me feel less alone.
I’ve just discovered creative catch up two months ago, through my discovery of the work of Melanie Chadwick. This is a beautiful, relaxed podcast between three friends who balance their conversations around creativity, youtube and business. I find it really calming to listen to, and am excited to catch up on older episodes!
This has been a beautiful way to discover more contemporary artists outside of my wheelhouse - I find it’s so easy to see more of the same kind of art through the algorithm - and this podcast has shared with me many artists from a wider range of disciplines, focuses and perspectives. It feels for me like visiting a modern art gallery, whilst getting to hear from the artist themselves what they are thinking.
If you’re into design and illustration, this is such a great podcast! Honest conversations with professionals across many industries. I love this podcast for learning more about other disciplines.
I love this podcast for the same reasons as Creative Boom - Meaningful conversations with big names across many disciplines. I’ve got episodes to catch up on from this podcast, and am excited to listen to the episodes with Wilfrid Wood and Hella Jongerius.
Run by three lovely humans, this podcast shares insights to an illustration practice. It’s lighthearted and full of great advice, tips and tricks. It’s run in tandem with their courses for artists and illustrators (I would love to join one of their courses, one of these days!) Definitely check them out.
Although they’re not running anymore, there’s a wealth of podcasts to listen back to. Narrated by Lisa Congdon, artist illustrator extravaganza - this podcast is filled with nuggets of learning, reflection and wisdom.
This podcast is like a warm hug. It’s between three friends sharing conversations on topics that come up for them in real time, related to their practice as illustrators. Lighthearted chats about big topics.
A craft focused podcast - this one is brilliant. We Are Makers is a beautiful magazine, who have such a skill at discovering and sharing stories from artisans all over the globe. They also share their podcast conversations on Youtube if you’re more of a visual listener.
I would LOVE to hear your recommendations to give me some fresh listens for the new year! I’ve also just started exploring Substack podcasts, so if you have any favourites on this platform too, let us know what you’ve been enjoying down below ☀️
Best, Orla
I've recently found Fail like an artist, by two artists living in New Zealand, lots of lovely relaxed chat highlighting the downs as well as the ups of being an artist. Have a Facebook group too.
Thank you very much for the mention. Having just downloaded substack it was lovely to see someone has written about us on the platform!! You are ace! Thank you!
