Recently I headed to the shores of Loch Lomond for a very changeable painting session - it went from rain to sun to wind and back again every five minutes making for an energetic time painting before the next spatters of rain appeared!
I’ve filmed this painting session for a video on Youtube called ‘How to Paint Outside’. It’s kind of a follow up from the ‘How to Sketch Outside’ video - continuing to explore a simple value study, but this time with paints, in a limited palette.
While you might not make a masterpiece (but that’s not really the point anyway)
What’s more important is:
in having fun
playing (which we just don’t do enough of as adults)
and getting outside / away from a screen
The basic premise of the video is in:
painting the landscape / wherever you are in just 2 colours
using two paint brushes
keeping things SIMPLE
playing & experimenting with textures
seeing just how much you can create with a basic set up & short time frame
Sharing
If you create anything in response to these ideas, I’d love to see & share it with the wider community. You can tag any photos of where you’re painting, and the work itself on instagram using the hashtag #theoutdoorsketchbookcollective
Outdoor Sketching Challenge
+ If you’re looking for even more encouragement to get outdoors sketching this summer, I’d love to invite you to our Outdoor Sketchbook Challenge. We’re shortly heading in to week 2 of our 1 month challenge, and there’s still so much to explore in the following weeks, focusing on:
week 2: loose & gestural lines
week 3: foraging for ideas & building mark making libraries
week 4: sketching abstracts inspired by nature
I hope the ideas in this video help to encourage you to get creative and spend a little more time outdoors this summer ☀️
Best,
Orla
